Their origin probably dates back to the early Middle Ages. Cantuccini were served on festive occasions with Vin Santo or, given their high energy value, they were consumed by those who set out on long pilgrimages or had to do particularly heavy work.
In 2016, almond Cantuccini obtained the prestigious European PGI certification and have become Cantuccini Toscani IGP.
